What’s the location …

Welcome to the Costa Rica of the Caribbean…..set upon one of the most unspoiled islands in the Caribbean, Dominica, Fort Young Hotel is located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. The island is off the beaten track and remains unspoilt by the impacts of mass tourism. It offers an ethical, environmentally supportive option for travellers.

Fort Young is the gateway to the best adventures Dominica has to offer. The four-star waterfront hotel, is built directly into the island’s historic fort and centrally located in the capital Roseau. It is right on the doorstep of the French Quarter’s vibrant markets so guests can browse the shops and discover the well-preserved colonial architecture.

Yet it is also the base camp for adventures around the island. Dominica is dubbed ‘the nature island’ of the Caribbean on par with Costa Rica with jaw-dropping land and seascapes to the rainforest, the Caribbean creole culture, trekking in the mountains, hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, thermal spas and other exciting adventures, guests may not want to leave. Five days are a minimum number of days for a guest to really enjoy Dominica and take wonderful memories back home but we’d suggest a full week if time allows. 

Dominica has a stunning shoreline and is also blessed with a network of rivers. There is one river for every day of the year, offering opportunities for rafting and canyoning. Furthermore, there are some amazing nature trails to explore including the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail . Meander the island’s thermal spas, 365 rivers, dramatic waterfalls, lush foliage and secluded beaches.

Underwater is just as vibrant as on land with snorkelling opportunities in the Champagne reef where you can get up close and personal with marine life, corals and even perhaps spot a native sperm whale. Fort Young is the only property on the island that has a dive shop and dive boats (from October) and unlimited shore diving just outside the hotel, they have sunk some canons and ocean-aged Dominican rum. All these tours are within five – twenty minutes either walking, by car or boat from the hotel and available on the island included package. You need a minimum of five nights to book this package. The backstory…. 

Dominica’s most storied property, Fort Young Hotel embraces a rich and soulful history that reinforces the hotel’s welcoming and homely ambiance. While the hotel first opened in 1964, the land upon which it sits stretches back to 1699. Having evolved from a military fort to a central police station and, presently, a hotel, the land has been inundated with an undeniable sense of character; a colourful and cultural vibrancy that defines Fort Young Hotel. In 1761, British forces took over this fort when they captured the island and nine years later, construction began on Fort Young, named after the island’s first British Governor.

Dining at Fort Young…

Fort Young Hotel offers an array of dining options and eateries, and with the all-inclusive, island-included program, guests have locally-sourced dishes.

The Palisades Restaurant

Enjoy panoramic ocean views at the only restaurant by the seashore on the island. Specialties include Lion Fish Bon Femme, Fort Nut soup blended with carrot, ginger and callaloo coconut or a char-grilled lobster with lemon butter and seasonal greens. The Palisades Restaurant is directly accessible from the private jetty, enabling yachts to moor up for an onshore lunch or dinner. With stunning vistas of the Caribbean Sea from every table upon the terrace and Roseau’s only air-conditioned restaurant interior, The Palisades Restaurant redefines fine dining on Dominica.

Libations and light bites at Warner’s Bar

Just beneath Palisades Restaurant, with a view to match is Warner’s Bar, where guests can enjoy signature cocktails mad with the hotel’s legendary rum punch. You can also grab salads and hot bites and pizzas.

Meet the Executive chef…

Mohamed Abu is the Executive chef at Fort Young. He has an impressive background in Italian, modern-fusion, Indian, and Arabic cuisine. Chef Mohamed prides himself on sourcing ingredients locally and using green energy products and has a commitment to sustainability.

The Rooms…

This four-star hotel has 70 rooms and suites, which is set to increase to 100, by the end of 2023. Every room is decorated in the colours of the Caribbean, with turquoise blues and warm yellow cushions and historic maps on the back wall. The Oceanfront suites are each named after a historical figure from Dominica’s past.

Suites have their own elevator access and come complete with a private balcony. There’s a bedroom area with a king-sized bed, a walk-through dressing room, and two bathrooms, featuring a whirlpool tub and shower. Then there’s the living space including a dining room and kitchenette. You can also currently choose from an oceanfront junior suite or deluxe oceanfront room. Located in the newly constructed and renovated historical section of the property, these rooms offer the comfort of modern luxury. Fully accessible by elevator, these well-appointed rooms offer either two doubles or one king sized bed, with balconies facing the mountains to offer spectacular views of nature. They are also ideal for families as they can sleep two adults and two children.

Fort Ocean View

Located in the newly constructed and renovated historical section of the property, these rooms offer the comfort of modern luxury. Fully accessible by elevator, these large and well-appointed rooms offer either two doubles or one king sized bed, with balconies to watch the sunset over the sea. They are also ideal for families as they can sleep two adults and two children.

We recommend these rooms for stays of five nights or more. You really need a week or two to truly get under the skin of Dominica

Fort Young Dive also offers a unique resort diving experience, making it convenient and comfortable for guests to make a splash at any time of day. Tanks are provided on the dock for the guests of Fort Young Dive on Dominica. Before going on your first boat dive you will receive a mandatory dive orientation in which you will fill out the necessary paperwork and also receive all the information that is needed to have a pleasant week of diving. Afterward, a check-out dive in front of the dive shop will make sure you and your equipment are in sync.

The next chapter

Getting there…

British Airways has a codeshare agreement with InterCaribbean so the best news is that this is a a through ticket. First fly BA to Barbados and then connect onto the InterCarribean flight. The onward flight is only one hour so this journey can be done in one day.

Most visitors will arrive through Douglas-Charles Airport, which is the larger of the two airports on the island and accommodates commercial airlines, located approximately 55 minutes from the capital city of Roseau.
